Il Grano, Exeter

A warm welcome awaits at Il Grano – Exeter’s new family-run Italian restaurant with a big heart.

It’s a real family affair. Owner Byl is of Italian descent but grew up in London. He wanted his wife and young boys to be able to grow up in a more rural area, so when the opportunity to go into partnership with his uncle in Exeter arose in August last year, Il Grano was born.

On arrival, visitors are treated to an enticing, atmospheric open view of the kitchen. I always think it’s great to see where the food is prepared as it exudes confidence and builds an unspoken relationship and bond of trust from the outset.

A sophisticated dining area is achieved thanks to real wood flooring, dark blue velvet seating and downlights from the high ceiling, creating intimate zones while feeling open and spacious. Relaxing background music pairs with Italian artwork to set the mood and provide talking points throughout your experience.

Accessibility is good, with no steps in the entrance and all amenities being on one level, while free parking can be found directly behind the restaurant.

Owner Byl tells us he always gets asked about the name. What does it mean?

Il Grano is Italian for ‘the grain’ – named after the staple part of many Italian dishes.

The uncomplicated nature of these dishes should not be confused with simplicity, as flavours are finely balanced, delivered and experimented with, to turn the simple grain into something so much more.

Expect a menu full of Italian classics, complemented by unique variations to offer a wide variety of choice. Crisp bruschetta with fresh vine tomatoes, feta cheese and black olives are a favourite to start, as is the antipasti selection serving two or four people.

Byl is incredibly passionate about the authenticity of Il Grano, and has assembled a talented team of chefs to deliver extraordinary, flavourful dishes using local ingredients where possible.

Mains include pasta dishes, including the delicious Paccheri Il Grano – a seafood lover’s dream thanks to octopus, cod fish, capri olives, garlic and cherry tomatoes – as well as pizzas, risotto, meat and fish dishes, salads and steaks.

Attention to detail is equally important – each dish thoughtfully plated to look stylish and inviting.

Stuck for dessert choice? No issues here. Byl suggested we had a bitesize selection of all of their amazing desserts – totally indulgent and no FOMO (fear of missing out).

A wide selection of wine and inventive cocktails are available to accompany your meal and round off your evening.

Furthermore, a collection only takeaway service means you can enjoy the magic of Il Grano at home too.

Humble, welcoming and full of flavour, Il Grano is not to be missed. Head to Pinhoe and discover this gateway to Italy.
