Colyford to Colyton Tramway Circular Walk
Treat yourself to a ride on the Seaton Tramway and experience the golden age of travel on this month’s walk. You can choose to walk the full 3.8 miles from Seaton to Colyton by following the footpath north from Seaton Jurassic Car Park, taking you via the stunning Seaton Wetlands before following the Colyford Road north to Colyford. The shorter route, which we focus on here, has you take the tramway from Seaton to Colyford and starting the 1.4 mile walk from the station there.
(1) From Colyford Station, exit the platform and head west towards the White Hart Inn pub, just behind. (2) Opposite the pub you’ll find a footpath sign and a gate, taking you into the field and along beside the River Coly.
From here the route is easy to follow as you amble along this peaceful, level grassy footpath listening to the sound of rushing water and birdsong as you go. Enjoy views across beautiful East Devon countryside as you navigate through a gate and under an overground pipe.
The River Coly is fast flowing and supports a wide range of wildlife including freshwater shrimp and brown trout. Bird spotters can keep their eyes peeled for the flash of a Kingfisher, the ever-popular Grey Wagtail as well as Mallards, Moorhens and even the mighty Grey Heron.
(3) Don’t take the first blue bridge on your left, instead continue through the field following the route of the river until you reach a wooden bridge that crosses to the other side. (4) From here, continue on the path nearest the river, now on your right, (5) as you make your way through a gate into a farm. Take the right turning and then left to take you onto Station Road. (6) Turn right and cross the bridge, before turning immediately right and following the road. (7) Take the first left and you will soon reach Colyton Tram Station.
Enjoy a classic Devon cream tea at the Tramstop Café as well as snacks, cakes and main meals in this delightful setting.
Embark on your exciting return journey on trams running every 20 mins throughout August. See the full calendar at www.tram.co.uk/calendar
